Greetings! Later in the semester, in The Satanic Verses, Rushdie will tell us "how newness enters the world," but for now all we know is that it enters via a blog. Whether this venue provides a second or a third space for the business of our Spring semester together is debatable, but it seems appropriate to invoke the language/metaphors/locales of Homi Bhabha and Pico Iyer for this blog. Perhaps, even, we can consider it another imaginary homeland. In any event, we'll use this space to continue the discussions begun in class, to share some lines of inquiry as they develop, to rehearse some ideas for papers, and hopefully even to be frivolous once in awhile, etc. I'll use this space for an occasional announcement, perhaps, or to share interesting links on the web, or for other miscellaneous musings both mundane and momentous; maybe we can even induce some of those 400+ members of the Midnight Children's Conference to leave a contribution. You, of course, are welcome and encouraged to comment on an existing posting or (assuming you've created your own account) to start a new thread (help me, too, by suggesting websites & resources to add to the "Elsewheres" list to the right).
It was great to meet you all last week (or, in some cases, happily to renew our collaboration). I hope all is going well with Radhakrishnan's article and the stories of East, West (of the nine stories, I've always been most dismissive of "Yorick" in the past, mostly because I've never known quite what to say about it, but I'm giving it another go this time!). See you all tomorrow night (and do feel welcome to get the conversation going in this space, if you so desire) ...
